Natural Hair Care: Toddler Edition

I’m in no way a natural hair care expert (I’m not even natural myself!) but I have gone through my fair share of products with Grace and found a routine that works for us and her super thick & curly coils.

Shampoo: I typically wash Grace’s hair every 2-3 weeks with Miss Jessie’s Creme De La Curl Shampoo. I don’t wash often because like her skin, Grace’s hair is super dry and only responds to manipulation when it is thoroughly moisturized so I have found that washing her hair more often drys it out. I like this product especially because it is SO thick and sulfate free so it cleans thoroughly without leaving a residue. It’s also extremely helpful with detangling all of her tight curls. I slather a generous amount of this through her hair, detangle with a wide tooth comb, then rinse.

Conditioner: I follow up with Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Restorative Conditioner. This is a perfect follow up because it isn’t thick at all but helps to restore shine and bounce to the curls we detangled and defined with the Ms. Jessie’s Wash. I leave this in for as long as she’ll let me then rinse again.

Leave-in: I don’t like using too heavy of a leave-in— I’m really just looking for enough to add lasting moisture since I’ve already done most of the detangling during the wash process. I like the Shea Moisture KIDS Extra-Moisturizing Detangler because it helps minimize her frizz, is light-weight and smells nice. If I style her hair with ponytails in the week, I also use this on her dry hair to refresh her curls and make brushing more manageable.

Scalp Conditioner: Or “Grease” lol.. I like to lightly massage an oil like Softee Coconut Oil in her scalp a day or two after wash day and periodically over the next couple weeks to keep her scalp from getting overly dry. I also use this when I decide to braid her hair to get smooth and shiny braids.

And that’s it! The least amount of product the better. If i’m curious about trying something new, I usually check out reviews online before purchasing but I pretty much stick to this routine because I know it works!
